Environmental Justice- People Over Polluters!

We are proud to announce our first campaign platform item, built together with residents over the past two months. To create our plan, we: met with local organizers who have been working on these issues in the area; attended the incredible public meeting hosted by the Southwest Environmental Alliance; and held three open community meetings to discuss this issue and others. Those conversations made it clear that environmental racism and corrupt development deals with toxic polluters places a great weight on the wards and neighborhoods of the south side - including ours.

Infrastructure and Public Transportation: Safe Streets Save Lives

Our built environment shapes everything around us. Investment in infrastructure is the difference between walkable neighborhoods and risk of death and injury. It affects our health, our happiness, and our opportunities in life. For too long we have seen essential streets go unshoveled after snowstorms, have been late for work due to ghost buses, and have dealt with crumbling streets, sidewalks, alleys and bridges.

Public Safety: Invest in Social Services

Ambria believes we must expand the ways that we address violence and increase public health and safety. We need violence interruption and violence prevention - it’s not enough to only react after harm has already been done. We must bring back social services that were provided in the past, as well as enacting new solutions that live up to the ills we face today, such as the the Treatment Not Trauma Ordinance and the Peace Book Ordinance. In addition, Ambria supports upgrading our built environment to promote safety for all residents by improving shared infrastructure and developing abandoned storefronts and lots.

Labor and Economic Supports

Everyone has a right to a liveable wage, safe, sanitary, and humane working conditions regardless of immigration status, race, language, gender, or area of work. We must protect the right to unionize and expand union power. Working conditions are our living conditions - our society is shaped by work. Ambria intends to secure a living wage and expand paid sick leave, and supports increasing good paying, public sector union jobs. We must expand job training programs with partnerships for trade union apprenticeships. We must also expand protections and support for our neighbors who are unable to work, whether that be due to disability, age, or other reasons.

Investing In Municipal Services

The ward office should be a place where all residents can access a wide array of public city services. Ambria will advocate for municipal sidewalk plowing, increased funding for current street plowing and repairs, and trashcans to line our major streets. The local ward office will provide formal support for independent local businesses in the face of competition from big box retailers like Amazon, increasing empty storefronts, increasing rent, and vacant lots. Ambria will establish a community-driven development process and participatory budgeting in the 11th Ward like many other wards already have. We will have regular ward nights and community town halls unlike our predecessors. Most importantly, every service provided by the city and ward must also have translated websites and literature into all languages spoken in the city.

Public Education and Youth Services

Ambria is a proud member of the Chicago Teachers’ Union and knows the conditions in our public schools firsthand. We must increase funding for education and earmark a majority of the money to fully staff schools and improve the buildings. Our families deserve free public child care, youth services and programming, and elder services that are culturally affirmative. We need increased multilingual services to support all of our students, and the city must work collaboratively with residents so that the new school coming to the 11th ward is successful.

Housing and Gentrification

Ambria believes that housing is a human right. No one should be forced out of their homes. Everyone should have safe homes, all residents should be taught their housing rights in their primary language. We must support increasing renter and homeowner protections, increasing funding to enforce protections and conditions regulations, and expanding services to prevent homelessness. We must embark on replacing all lead service lines. Ambria will support family-sized affordable housing and oppose increasing property taxes on Chicago’s working class to fight gentrification.

Tell Chicago City Council - Have a Hearing on Dangerous Railroad Viaducts!

All across Chicago, there are railroad viaducts that allow trains to pass over streets. Every year they get worse, and it's clear that today, you could gamble on which one falls first. These viaducts are a tragedy waiting to happen because of decades of neglect - take any engineer or architect to see one of them and they'll tell you so (we did just that, check out the video).

Sign our petition to show your alderman that you support Resolution R2022-530 to have a hearing about repairing the viaducts, and that you want them to sign on to the resolution to help make it happen.

The Workers Rights Amendment: Vote YES on your ballot November 8th 2022

The Ambria for Alderman campaign supports workers’ rights to organize for a better life, which is why we support the state-wide ballot referenda to recognize this right to organize with coworkers for better wages and working conditions. This referendum will protect working class communities like ours from threats to wages, benefits, and dignity at work. Working conditions are our living conditions. Dangerous and illegal business practices impact all of us and unions protect us against them every day.

We will be knocking doors between now and November to talk to voters about this Amendment while gathering petition signatures to make sure Ambria is on the ballot in February 2023.
