Snow Sidewalk Shoveling

Last winter we organized a successful effort to clear a dangerous overpass that had consistently gone unshovelled after snow storms for years. This overpass is the only way for residents to access the Ashland orange line station, and its sidewalk being covered in ice & snow forced anyone crossing the bridge to walk on the street and risk getting hit by cars going as fast as 35 miles per hour. This effort showed what's possible, but there's more for us to do!

Sign our form below if you need assistance clearing your sidewalk this winter or if you are interested in helping your neighbors in clearing their sidewalks.

In Chicago, the city puts the responsibility for clearing snow from sidewalks on building owners. This leaves many sidewalks slippery and blocked, whether the owner is unable to do so themselves, unable to afford to pay someone, or just is absentee and doesn't care. This leaves our neighbors trying to navigate dangerous conditions just to get around, and that should not happen. Until the city passes an ordinance to include sidewalk clearing in their snow maintenance (which is a piece of legislation our campaign supports), we must support each other.
